We've been fingerprinted!

Last night I was very happy when I got home from work because an invitation to be fingerprinted by the USCIS/INS was in the mail! I was quite happy, jumping around! So, of course, we went today (we were excited to be able to do it on a Saturday and not take off additional time from work). The wait wasn't too bad ... we were in and out of the office in 65-70 minutes. The technician scans all 10 of your fingers into a machine and you can see your prints on the screen. And so now, we continue waiting on the I-171H USCIS/INS pre-approval to bring Isabella into the US as an American citizen, but we are one step closer!!!

Tim decided that Isabella's first words would be "Mommy, poopies" since he thinks I am going to change all the poopy diapers. He is, of course, delusional!

Are we nine months away from referral?

Today, families with our agency, CAWLI, received their referrals from China. This is a picture of their child, his or her original Chinese name, the province she or he is in, and an estimated birth date and health information. These were families that had DTC dates from late November to late December.

My best guess is that Tim and I will probably receive our referral in late March now, if all goes on schedule. This assumes that our dossier gets sent to China by mid-August. This means that we are about 9 months away from referral! At least we hope so (although we would not complain if referral came sooner!)

Homestudy now at USCIS/INS

The final reports for our homestudy were mailed out on Friday. One copy to the USCIS/INS office, and two copies to us. I took one of the copies today and FedExed it to our placement agency for our dossier. Our dossier is now complete except for the INS approval. We are hoping to be called in for a fingerprinting appointment before July 1.

Yesterday I gave Tim a father's day present, which was a baby book called "Daddy Cuddles". It shows animals and their babies, and how they snuggle up. I have been pretty good about not shopping for Baby Isabella, which is helped by the fact that we are moving mid-August. I have a small box of things - 2 bibs, a UMASS Class of 20?? T-shirt (size 12 months) and some books.

Yesterday we looked at a map of China and where we will be going. Here's a map of China: http://china.scmp.com/map/. First, we will go to Beijing and sight see. Then we will go to the area where our daughter is. She will most likely be from either Jiangxi, Hunan, or Guangdong Province. After that, we will go to Guangzhou, which is a city in Southern China where the US Consulate is. We will stay at the White Swan Hotel, which is famous in the adoption community (http://www.white-swan-hotel.com/eng/Public/index.asp). Our last stop in China will be Hong Kong. I find this unbelievable when the most exotic places I've been are Montreal and the Bahamas!

Supposed to be doing work but ...

Tonight I am at a hotel in Annapolis, MD...I am giving a paper tomorrow at 8:30 AM. I should be fixing my Power Point slides up, but instead I am on the Internet, looking at China adoption stories. Check out http://www.thestoryofyou.com/ sometime. It amazes me how different these babies are ... and how much they change from their referral photos to "Gotcha Day" to how they are after just a few days with what are called "their forever families". Oh how we are waiting to be a forever family! Sometimes I grab at Tim's arm or hand and say "It's going to happen right?" And he always smiles and says "Yep, it's going to happen". He is so patient, so calm. It really makes me crazy sometimes, as much as I admire him!

Our child will be an Isabella...

Today the social worker from CAWLI, Stephanie, reviewed our draft homestudy. She told us that since we had left the gender of the child unspecified, we would most likely be referred a boy. So, Tim and I talked and decided to adopt a girl specifically, since there are more adopted Chinese girls in the United States than adopted Chinese boys, and we want her sense of community to be as strong as possible. If we were to adopt a second child, which we hope to do, we would leave gender unspecified, with the realization that we would most likely be referred a boy. By then we will have more experience in the Chinese adoption community. So, we will have a daughter! Tim loves to walk around saying "Bella!" with a pretty bad fake Italian accent.

Draft Homestudy Report is In!

Today we received the draft homestudy report from our social worker at the Datz Foundation! She emailed it to us, and we reviewed it for corrections tonight. I just sent an email to our placement agency, with the draft report and our suggested corrections attached. Stephanie, the social worker at CAWLI, will review the draft report. We will then send the complete list of suggested changes (both ours and CALWI's) to Datz, and then they will send out three final copies of the homestudy report. One will go to the USCIS/INS office, one will go to our placement agency for inclusion in our dossier, and we get to keep one copy. Our dossier is complete except for two precious documents: the final homestudy report and the INS I-171H approval form.

We are getting there, even if somedays it doesn't feel that way. I can't say enough good things about the email discussion lists I've joined - it's wonderful to connect with people who are all worried about these precious pieces of paperwork! We also discuss things like baby names and baby carriers, where the best places to eat and shop are in China, etc. Apparently umbrella strollers there are dirt cheap and well-made. Who knew? I've joined some general China adoption groups, as well as the July 2005 DTC group and the August 2005 DTC group. It's most likely we will be an August DTC couple. A lot of people consider the DTC date the date they officially become "paperwork pregnant", since right now the time from DTC date to Gotcha Day (the day your baby is handed to you) is about 7-8 months. Tim and I are ready to be paperwork pregnant!

Where is the Homestudy?

So, it is now 3:14 PM, and I am sitting in front of my computer at work, obsessively refreshing my email every 5 minutes or so! No draft homestudy report yet. Where is it?
Tim tells me to take "one or two" deep breaths and reminds me that we are nearly at the end of the documentation stage ... He has saint-like patience. It's a good thing we are going to a concert tonight, otherwise I would spend the night by our home computer. I've already decided we are calling our social worker tomorrow morning if we haven't received it by then.

Our homestudy report is on the horizon!

I just talked with our social worker, and she tells me that she should have a copy of our homestudy report done by tonight or tomorrow. She will email it to us, and we will check it for accuracy. Then it will be emailed to CAWLI, our placement agency, who will review it. All changes will be sent back to our social worker, who will then issue the final report. Once the final report reaches the USCIS/INS, we begin waiting for the I-171H, which is the last piece of paper to go into our dossier. The dossier then gets authenticated and certified by the agency, which takes about 3-4 weeks. Then we will be DTC (Dossier to China)!

I have to say that I feel a little insane! Good thing Tim is calmer than me...

Our Visa Photos

Tammy and Tim-Visa Photos Posted by Hello
One of the things we have to have in our dossier that will be sent to China is photos for our visas to travel in China. So...here they are! You will notice than Tim is much more photogenic than me ... in my defense though, these pictures were taken at two different photo shops by two different people!

Adoption Journey Timeline

I thought it might be useful and interesting for people to have a look at the timeline of our adoption journey. It's also helpful to me to write all this down!

July 2004:
Tim and I go to a group information session at China Adoption With Love, Inc., in Brookline, MA.

February 2005:
2/12: We have our intake interview with China Adoption With Love.
The director of CAWLI, Lillian, walks us through the process and explains the paperwork we will need.

March 2005:
3/15: We mail off home study fee to the Datz Foundation in Vienna, VA.

April 2005:
4/26: Tim has his physical exam.
4/27: Tammy has her physical exam.

May 2005:
5/6: First homestudy visit with our social worker, Maureen Kenney. This is a joint interview in our home. The primary topics are why we want to adopt, why we want to adopt from China specifically, our individual strengths and weaknesses, and our marriage.
5/9: Second homestudy visit - Tim's interview. This interview takes place in a Datz office in Washington DC. Tim discusses his life history.
5/11: Third homestudy visit-Tammy's interview. This interview takes place in a Datz office in Washington DC. Tammy discusses her life history.
5/19: Interagency Agreement Received from CAWLI from Datz
5/21: The I-600A application was mailed off to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Washington DC district office.
5/23: Our last homestudy visit, which takes places in our home. The primary topics are our finances, and what type of parents we hope to be.
Our social worker tells us to expect a draft report, which CAWLI will then review, in two-three weeks.

June 2005:
6/3: We agree on a name for our first child: "Isabella Carmen" or "Samuel Kindahl".
6/4: Received USCIS acknowledgement of receipt of I-600A form.
6/8: We receive a draft homestudy report via email from our social worker. We make our list of corrections. We then forward the draft report and our corrections to our placement agency in Brookline, MA, where a social worker there will review the report.
6/9: We make the decision to specifically request a girl...our "Isabella Carmen". We modify our letter of application and commitment to CCAA, and send a copy off to CAWLI. We also send suggested changes to our homestudy report (ours and CAWLI's) to Jeanne Benson at the Datz Foundation via email.
6/17: One copy of our final homestudy report is sent to the USCIS/INS office.
6/18: We receive our copies of the final homestudy report.
6/20: We FedExed one copy of our final homestudy report to CAWLI.
6/25: We are fingerprinted at the USCIS application support center in Alexandria, VA.

July 2005:
We wait and wait on the I-171H form from the NoVA/Washington DC USCIS office.

August 2005:
8/11: The adoption officer from the NoVA/Washington DC USCIS office calls Tammy and tells her NO I-171H approval because we are moving soon. Our file is forwarded to the Boston USCIS field office. We are told we will need to get a homestudy update for our new home before receiving the INS approval. This is different than what we were originally told, which was that we would simply need to get a homestudy update before we travelled to China. Our agency, CAWLI, tells us they have never seen a case where the USCIS field decided to withold approval.
8/19: We move into our new home in Milton, MA.
8/23: We mail new background requests for the state of MA. Our background checks have to be redone in the state of MA.

September 2005:
9/1: We schedule our homestudy update appointment for Monday, September 12, at 6pm.
9/12: Our homestudy update happens! Our social worker's name is Jo. She tells me that our MA background checks are in, and that she expects to have the HS update written by the beginning of next week.
9/17: We receive the homestudy update in the mail. Jo is fast!!!
9/19: We mail the homestudy update and cover letter to the Boston USCIS.
9/30: Our INS approval is processed at the Boston USCIS office! Hurray!!!

October 2005:
10/12: INS approval received!!! At last!!!
10/31: We are DTC!!! CAWLI tells us to expect a May or June referral!!!

November 2005:
We have been told to expect a longer wait for referral.
11/18: LID!!!

December 2005:
12/12: We are informed that our LID was 11/18/2005.

January 2006:
1/7: Tim and I attended a pre-travel meeting at CAWLI, run by a parent to two Chinese daughters, Elizabeth King. The agency director, Lillian, speaks to us, and it remains uncertain when we will receive our referral.

September 2006:
9/2: The CCAA updates its website to say that families with dossiers logged in by November 30, 2005 are out of the review room. That means us!
9/11: We send out the following via U.S. mail: a.) a request to be re-finger printed at the Boston USCIS office, b.) a homestudy update questionnaire to Jo LeBlanc, our social worker through CAWLI, and c.) a request to be re-CORIed (another police background check).
9/18: We send out a request to have our Dept. of Social Services background check redone.

October 2006:
10/19: We are re-fingerprinted.

February 2007:
2/12: We sent out the materials to re-new our I-797C.
2/26: Our re-file for the I-797C is approved by USCIS in Boston.

August 2007:
8/2: We receive a referral for our daughter, Xiu Fu Xun. The happiest day of my life so far!!!

We have a name!

I wore him down ... Last night Tim finally gave in and was willing to commit to a name for our child!!! So here goes:

1. For a girl: Isabella Carmen
Isabella is Italian in origin and means "consecrated to God". Carmen is Tim's grandmother's name, and she is a beautiful lady, inside and out. Carmen is Latin in origin and means "Song". We will follow Carmen with a Chinese name, either part of her original name or with "Li", which means "strength".

2. For a boy: Samuel Kindahl
Samuel is Hebrew in origin and means "God hears". Kindahl is the surname of an economics professor that is near and dear to my heart, James K. Kindahl. He passed away a few years ago. I recently established, with the support of his family, a memorial prize for excellence in undergraduate economics at Umass-Amherst. We would also include a Chinese name before or after Kindahl.

It is a wonderful thing to be able to think of "Isabella" or "Sam" instead of"her" or "him".

Almost done paperchasing ...

Tim and I had our last homestudy visit on May 23rd. A draft of our homestudy should be ready within two weeks. It will be reviewed by our placement agency, China Adoption With Love, Inc (CALWI). After that, a final version will be sent to the USCIS office in Vienna, VA, where we will be fingerprinted. Sometime after our fingerprinting appointment, we will receive the precious I171H form, which is the INS approval to bring our daughter or son into the U.S. as a United States Citizen.

There is very little left for Tim and I to do on the paperwork front. It hard to have so much out of our control (we are waiting on the social worker to write the homestudy report, then we will wait for the INS approval, and then we will wait for our dossier to be authenticated by CAWLI) ... we are so eager to become DTC (Dossier to China!)

We are hoping for an August DTC date. Keep your fingers crossed for us!!!
