The diaper question.

So, sitting on this side of parenthood, I can think about how I would like to do things (rather than what I will need to do to survive). And right now, I intend to use some form of cloth diaper once we return from China. Yes, I may be insane. But the idea of all those disposbales ending up in a landfill just does not sit well with me. I am doing some research here, and leaning towards a pocket diaper system. Anyone have any experience with the cloth scene?

I did cloth with Lindsey for the first year. Loved it! You're not insane. :-) I used a variety of prefolds with a cover, fitted with a cover, and some pocket diapers. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably do all pockets. But I did like all the ways. A great cloth diapering site is diaperpin.com. If you want to email me with any questions, feel free! I'm so excited for you to have little Isabella and see those cloth diapers on her little buns. :-)

Ooops, I didn't check out your link, I now see it is for diaperpin. So you've already been there. I don't know if Green Mountain Diapers is still in business, I would think so. But that's another great site. Her catalog is great (at least it was in 2003) and she adopted a little girl from China a few years ago too.

There's a lot more choice now in cloth diapers so it's not what it used to be.
I have never tried them though but don't think you insane for wanting to give it a go.

The only experience I have with cloth diapers is in toddlers about 18 months old (twins) and they leaked all the time! They needed to be changed at least every 1.5 hours or they would leak and at night the parents had to double diaper the kids which looked extreamly uncomfortable! I know there are many different kinds and maybe these weren't the best brand or something but I wouldn't use them again! Also, if your child will be in daycare find out what types of diapers they will allow-some allow cloth, some don't.

Have you heard about these:

Worth checking into. We were at the end of our diapering when we discovered them. Our daughter used cloth at her daycare but I'm sad to say, we used disposable - the natural kind, but nonetheless...

We did cloth with our older two boys. This was "back in the day" 1989-93. There weren't as many cool options back then. We started with a diaper service actually which worked pretty well. You had to rinse the poop off in the toilet, then just drop them in the lined diaper pail. After a couple years of this we actually just started washing them ourselves. I really didn't mind this too much, but must warn that it does qualify for the Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs show. I can still remember the smell of that diaper pail - not good! :O

There isn't a pleasant solution to diapering. I believe cloth is the most earth friendly way to go.

Did you make any decisions? I think I am going to go back to cloth with Allison! Not positive, but I'm getting the bug. Cloth diapering is fun (weird but true).
